Oh what makes life seem worthwhile
Dwells in your eyes
and the spell of your smile.
That's how the lyrics of "Yours Is My Heart Alone" song (penned by Frank Sinatra, by the way...)
But... when Dennis sang it, did he ever sing "... the SMELL of your smile"?
Sometimes I could swear that he sings SMELL. Who could resist throwing that in as a gag when COLGATE is your sponser?? (Clean your breath while you clean your teeth!)
Also in the 1948-49 season the focus seemed to shift to Luster Cream shampoo (also by the Palmolive/Colgate company) and away from Colgate, and in January of that season, the theme song went to:
Every song I sing
I'll sing to you
And I hope I can bring you
A smile or two...
Co-incidence? Perhaps!

"Yours Is My Heart Alone" was made famous by Frank Sinatra in 1940 while he was with the Tommy Dorsey Orchestra (it may have been his first major hit) but it was not penned by him or by Tommy Dorsey. The song actually comes from Austrian composer Franz Lehár's musical "Land of Smiles" ("Das Land des Lächelns"). The original German title of "Your is My Heart Alone" is "Dein ist mein ganzes Herz," and the lyricists were Ludwig Herzer and Fritz Lohner.

The young Frank Sinatra had another early connection with Jack Benny. In Buck Benny Rides Again, Ellen Drew sang a Frank Loesser song written for the movie called Say It (Over and Over Again). The very same year, Tommy Dorsey chose this song for one of Frank Sinatra's first recording sessions with Dorsey's band. Dennis also sang Say It on one of Jack's shows around the time of Buck Benny's release.
