Spring 1940 opening numbers

What is the deal with the opening songs in the spring of 1940? Don is giving them such bizarre names, like "The Phil Harris Concerto #6 For Oboe And Drum" (400309), to which people are laughing (the band? the cast?)? Was Don just having fun making up names for the opening songs?

This is probably discussed elsewhere on the board, but I have an extended theory about those which is laid out in the introduction of 39 Forever Volume 1.

Laura, you're worse than Don Wilson dragging that middle Jell-O commercial into the show by its heels!
