WHERE'S JACK? Mysery Photo #7

Postby shimp scrampi » Sun Jun 18, 2006 8:38 am

LOL, Maxwell! Who could tell if Jack was protesting or just being cheap when fasting?

OK, moving on to a new mystery photo...

You're Jack Benny. You're taking an old pal out for a night on the town. What RESTAURANT are Jack and Friend pictured in????

Image

Is it just me, or are there a LOT of pictures of Jack and chimps in circulation?

There's a clue in the photo - you may be able to glean the first letter of the restaurant if you squint *cough*placemat*cough*.

There's a clue in that previous posting too...come on folks, you can get this. No invitation required (that's another clue for the die-hard Bennyphiles).

YES! Congrats Alan!!!!

This is a 1960 press event party at the Automat, specifically, the one (there were many locations) on 45th and 5th Ave in New York.

Another view:

That's Jackson with Kokomo, Jr. the chimpanzee - famous for replacing J. Fred Muggs on the "Today" show - and also for being able to 'speak' the single word 'mama'. I actually had to learn about Kokomo Jr. in a college psych and/or anthropology class where we discussed the language capacities of non-human primates. Short version - this vocalization trick by Kokomo Jr. ain't really great evidence of that.

Kokomo Jr. is still with us, retired and doing paintings in North Carolina.

Oh, yeah, and selling packaging tape. Now, there would be a crazy interview for Laura to conduct for a future issue of the Jack Benny Times!

So, what was it like working with Jack?

Mama!

Who thought up the Automat gag location?

Mama!

etc... LOL.

Invitation and a Quick Tutorial

Postby shimp scrampi » Thu Jun 22, 2006 8:34 am

Folks, I am happy to keep posting images but want to encourage others put up candidates for the game as well. I've noticed that a lot of members here don't frequently put up images, so I want to provide a quick tutorial as to how it is done.

It is VERY easy!

First, if you are finding a picture from the internet, SAVE it to your own computer, by right-clicking on the picture (Internet Explorer/Firefox) and choosing "save image or save picture" to your own computer. Or, you might have your own scan from a book or magazine. It's important that the file is saved somewhere on your OWN computer though.

Then, you can go to www.imageshack.us (this is the way I do it). On that page, click the "browse" button. It will open up a normal window just like looking for any other file on your computer. Find your picture file and double-click on it. The file path will then appear in the imageshack page. If the size of the picture might be too big, check the "resize image for websites" box.

Then, click "Host It!"

A new page will appear giving you a whole bunch of URLs to use, depending on how you want the image to appear.

The easiest way is to just copy the LAST URL ("http..." address) you are given: "direct link to image".

Come to the forum and make a normal post. Where you want to put your image, click the "Img" button. Type or copy/paste the URL from Imageshack. Click the "Img" button again. you should have 'tags' of img in brackets, and a "/img" in brackets before and behind your URL image address.

That's it!

I'm sure more of you have fun pictures of Jack & Co. to share, so hop right in!

Mystery Photo #8

Postby shimp scrampi » Fri Jun 23, 2006 1:33 am

Here's Jack at age twenty-nine! The man he is with is best known today for his TV work in the fifties years later. Who is he?

Wow, Jack sure looks young in that picture! Is the other man William Frawley?

Correct! It's William Frawley, best known as Fred Mertz on "I Love Lucy", but also a big staple of the vaudeville circuit.

Correction! The photo date on this is 1925, which would make Jack around 31 rather than 29 as I said earlier.

Hmmm. This isn't from some incident where Carmichael chased Jack up a tree is it? I have no idea, but if nothing else, staring at this pic searching for clues for 10 minutes has at least persuaded me I should try to get in a couple of extra hours at the gym this week, so thanks for that LL!

Wow, Laura is a tough quizmaster - at least I dropped hints after awhile! Another snarky response to 'Where's Jack' - somewhere between the dalmatian and the fire hydrant?
