V-Mail

Postby DerekVOF » Sun Jul 30, 2006 4:46 am

As a "young-un", I had never heard of V-mail before, not the kind Jack talks about on several of his shows at least.

There's actually a couple nice articles about Victory Mail here:
http://www.postalmuseum.si.edu/exhibits/2d2a_vmail.html
http://www.postalmuseum.si.edu/museum/1d_V-Mail.html

And several old newspaper ads on Victory Mail here:

Just thought I'd pass them along...
"Ship off the starboard bow!" "What kind is she?" "She's a Spanish Galleon!" "A galleon?" "Good! That's a quart for each of us!"

Great links Derek! I always like these "history fringe benefits" of researching and learning about some of the references in the Benny show. I wonder if any of these 16mm reels still exist? They'd be fascinating for historians.

Yeah, I've spent a lot of time on Wikipedia learning all about the actors and actresses (Ronald Coleman, Claudette Colbert, etc.)... and of course, Petrillo :D It's sure been a history lesson listening to the shows...

I'm not sure about the 16mm film, but I have seen actual v-mail letters (used and unused) on eBay...

This is a little premature since the web page has just a few entries in it. But since the topic came up I'll give the link out:

http://www.day3media.com/culture.html

This is a page I'm putting together to help "young-uns" and OTR newbies with the cultural references of the 40s and 50s. (Eventually I hope to have short audio/video clips with each entry as examples, but that is several weeks out.)

I've been compiling these entries over the last couple of years, and I'm just now starting to put it online. As you can see, I am doing it alphabetically, and am only down to the Cs.

I welcome any additions or corrections, (or even burning questions if I can answer them. I was born in 1970 myself, so I'm just putting the "puzzle" together myself as I go!)
