Cal Howard

Thanks to those in the chat room who recommended shows for me to listen to. I'd never heard Casablanca (Oct. 17, 1943) before so listened to that first.

I was quite surprised to hear Benny call a line-up of his writers, then hear the name "Howard." I had no idea Jack had hired him.

Cal Howard wrote cartoons for Lantz, Warners and Fleischer in the 30s, Columbia after the war, then Lantz and Warners in the 60s. I knew he had done some radio writing, and can only assume the joke about "Howard.. defected to the Red Skelton show) was something which happened that they used as an inside joke in the script.

By all accounts, Cal was a pretty funny guy.

But not for Jack. This was Cy Howard (the one writer of the 1943 group hired by Jack himself), who was dismissed soon afterwards.

In the late 1940's, Cy Howard would become quite a big name at CBS. During that time he created the hit CBS radio sitcoms "My Friend Irma" and "Life With Luigi".

From what I've heard and read, Howard had quite a nasty and volatile temper, which could have been a major factor in his dismissal from Jack's program.

Thanks, Laura. I should be more careful with my web searches. I know Cal worked for Skelton but couldn't find where Cy wrote for Skelton's radio show. So much for putting two and two together!
