"The Jack Benny Award For Comedy"

Postby ZEjackbennykid » Wed Aug 16, 2006 1:37 pm

I recently read in SCI-FI Magazine that their was a Jack Benny Comedy Award and the Winner of this years was one of the best and funniest filmmakers of all-time: Kevin Smith.

Smith, who made The Jay and Silent Bob movies ( Clerks, Mallrats, Chasing Amy, Dogma, Jayand Silent Bob Strike Back, and Clerks II)
was the right person to recieve that award.

See Clerks II in theaters nationwide NOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I saw it Opening day and it was the best comedy of the year and one of the years best, second to A Prarie Home Companion, which is Robert Altmans Best film since M*A*S*H

Yes, that's the UCLA Jack Benny Award, which is an annual event. I even helped them put together photos and videos for this year's event, which also featured an appearance by Joan.

Have you seen any of Smith's films? How about Altmans Prairie Home Companion?

I've seen the Prairie Home Companion movie...liked it, thouth my feeling is that people who like the radio show will like the film, other people will be left rather cold.

Kevin Smith

I liked Kevin Smith's original "Clerks" (over 10 years ago now?)

Just like his recent "Clerks 2", it seems like he has a very dedicated audience that luvs his stuff (i guess you could say that about many), but most critical and non-fan reviews seem to be just "good".

I heard him on Oppie and Anthony radio show (note-for satellite radio listeners, i highly recommend "Ron+Fez show" -adult content but NOT juvenile Howard Stern or moronic "FM zoo") recently; imo, he was witty, knowledgable and personable, but i can't get motivated about his movies, tho i may eventually watch Clerks 2 on dvd/tv.

It may be an age thing; i believe i'm very close in age to him but his audience seems largely 15-23ish...

Kevin Smith's films are original and often provocative, at least the ones I've seen. But I've never found them laugh out loud funny. I appreciated the social and political messages in Dogma but thought the movie overall was a big messy bore. The critics mostly panned Jersey Girl but I liked that a lot better.

I must admit I've never heard of Kevin Smith, so I can't comment on him, but I don't find most "modern" comedy funny.

Don't you hate when you put together a witty, well-thought-out message, and then forget to hit the "submit" button?!?

Well, I did it again, but here's approximately what I said:

I liked Clerks, Chasing Amy and Dogma. Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back was kind of fun. I didn't like Mallrats very much.

I doubt if I will take the time to see Clerks II. I am slightly interested in what happens to Dante and Randall, but I'm just getting a little tired of the self-indulgent in-jokes and pop culture references.

Smith carved out a good niche for himself, and is a good director, although sometimes he seems to have a bit of a penchant for scatological humor that seems unneccessary to me. (Take for instance the Golgotha creature in Dogma. I know they give some lame excuse for its existance in the movie, but, really, what does that have to do with the plot?) In my humble opinion, that scene alone knocked the movie down several notches from being a top-flight film.

My time seems to be taken up a little more with family matters these days. (We just had a new little Jack Benny fan added to our family October 8th.) So the not-too-difficult delimma is: Should I go see Clerks II, or pop in the DVD of Citizen Kane one more time? Not too tough of a decision for me.

Actually, the recipient is voted on by UCLA students. So, there you go.

I think it's a safe bet that "Kramer" will never receive this award, or any other award for comedy!

Now why must we go and bash Michael Richards. He had an anger problem that he needs to fix, hes already stated it. He is not a racist in my humble opinion.
