Jack/Rochester Nostalgia Digest Cover

I just subscribed to the magazine because of this issue's cover. It's a picture of Jack and Roch with the Maxwell.

I haven't received it yet, so I can't tell you about the articles inside: "I Can Stand Jack Benny Because..." and "The Movie Career of Eddie Anderson."

The cover is shown at http://www.nostalgiadigest.com. They sell subscriptions there, but they also sell individual copies of the magazine if you're interested.

(As a longtime resident of the Chicago area, I was also interested in the article appearing on the web site about Dick "Two Ton" Baker, a local piano player and early local TV star. One of my favorite shows as a pre-schooler was Baker's "Happy Pirates" show. Baker was also the commercial spokesman for Riverview Amusement Park which closed around 1967-68.)

There is also a schedule of Chuck Schaden's "Those Were the Days" radio broadcasts through March, so his February "Jack Benny Month" broadcasts are included. This year he'll be featuring some shows he broadcast in 1994 with lots of interviews with cast and writers from the Jack Benny Program, including Jack himself. There are also numerous clips from Benny Shows. Also featured will be a number of appearances by Jack in other programs, including one of my favorites, "Plan X" from "Suspense."

The magazine arrived yesterday, and the article had a lot of nice things to say about Jack, and a few good pictures, most of which I think I've seen on this site.

The Anderson article talked a lot about the stereotypes that Anderson had to deal with in scripts and noted that they are far less prevalent in the movies he made with Jack. They also mentioned how Jack's writers made a concerted effort to rid his character of stereotyping in the '40s. The article mentioned most of his larger roles, and of course his one starring role in "Cabin in the Sky."

I heard today on Schaden's radio program that this quarter's Nostalgia Digest had sold out, "due to an unexpected influx of orders." I certainly hope some of those came from the IJBFC. The Jack and Eddie Anderson articles were both very good.
