That's What I like About the South (Phil's Song)

Postby krledu » Sun Mar 04, 2007 10:48 pm

Does anyone know when the first time Thats What I Like About the South was heard on the Jack Benny Program? I have started listening again from the first episode that featured Phil and have listened all the way up to 1939 (every episode) and haven't heard it yet. I know later this song became closely associated with Phil but I never remember hearing it on any show I've heard. Anyone know? Kristin

I believe the first performance on the show was February 2nd, 1941 when Jack was out sick. Herbert Marshall was filling in for him.
"Ship off the starboard bow!" "What kind is she?" "She's a Spanish Galleon!" "A galleon?" "Good! That's a quart for each of us!"

Yes, that is the episode I was looking for. Its very interesting because Phil wasn't even really from the south but yet this song is widely to be known as Phil's song. Its a fun song and a very, very funny episode.

Galveston, Texas, certainly claimed him as one of their own. I have a couple of newspaper articles on his return there. He was front-page news.

I know that he was born in Indiana, I believe, and then lived for a while in Tennesee. Did the papers say he lived there? Don't remember if he did or not? I do know he traveled alot in his early days as a band leader. Where did find the newspaper articles?
