Did he play on the radio?

Postby DerekVOF » Fri Apr 13, 2007 5:43 pm

Just a question that may have been answered already. I know that Jack played his violin all the time on TV (especially with Gisele MacKenzie which always makes me laugh - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dgw9I-U7Oc0 ), and I know that there were several times on the radio when they indicated that he was playing -- but how many times was he ACTUALLY playing?

I mean when Professor Le Blanc gives him his lessons, is he playing? How about the Peasant & Poet Overture? The Bee? I'm just curious because several times he's supposed to be playing but sounds like he's right in front of the mic and his voice isn't going in and out like I might expect while he's playing and moving.

Anyone know?
"Ship off the starboard bow!" "What kind is she?" "She's a Spanish Galleon!" "A galleon?" "Good! That's a quart for each of us!"

It sure sounded like the same person playing each time. If it wasn't Jack, I'd be really surprised.

In some cases, you can tell by the audience reaction. Good examples are when he and Fred Allen (on a clarinet) are doing Tea For Two. I imagine that's him sawing away on a couple of Lucky Strike commercials. The sponsor pays for his money's worth!

Count me in as agreeing that Jack did the playing, at least most of the time, although it would be good to have someone who actually attended the radio broadcasts to confirm - I think this question has come up before.

It's a noticeably distinct way of playing badly. Just like you can always tell a Jack vocal impersonator from the real thing, I'd say it extends to the violin playing as well. The playing also sounds the same on other programs when he guest-starred, suggesting to me, anyway, that it wasn't some member of the orchestra subbing in.

I'm almost positive Jack was playing. It would have been a strange (and probably disappointing) visual to have someone from the orchestra (Larry Kurkdjie?) stand up to do Jack's bad violin playing.

OK, I stand corrected (on at least one occasion). See the next issue of the Jack Benny Times, coming soon!
