What did Jack watch?

Postby Jhammes » Fri Sep 07, 2007 11:35 am

For some reason these came to mind... must be a slow day.

Did Jack Benny watch much 1950's - early '70's television?

What shows did he like? ( Other than his own :) )

And... drum roll...

When The Jack Benny Program was first syndicated, did they
dub copies for international markets?

(Now, wouldn't THAT be a find. Always fun to see international
copies of Bonanza, Dark Shadows, et. al. and they all know
the respective language... tho, the dubbing is about as "good"
as one would expect :D )

I can't say what Jack watched, but I am reminded of when Gomer Pyle premiered on CBS opposite Jack's final season on NBC..Jack was getting beaten by Gomer Pyle in the ratings....Lamenting the fact that the Pyle show was beating his, Jack said something to the effect of.."I know Jim Nabors is a fine comedian and probably a nice young man..but to be beaten in the ratings by Gomer Pyle?"..

Jack Benny and Baseball

Postby Jhammes » Fri Sep 14, 2007 8:31 am

Actually, Jack Benny was always touring with his one man show, and appearing in specials and on the talk show circuit, so he probably did not have much time for television. Baseball was a favorite - there are several baseball stories in "Sunday Nights At Seven" - so it may stand to reason he
made time to watch televised games. Definitely the World Series...that was
a recurring theme during the radio years.

Well, there's an old story that when Bonanza was on opposite Jack, only the second half overlapped with Jack's show. Gonna cheat and copy from my online biography:

Jack decided to watch it one week, and ended up missing his own program. Jack noted, "If I myself get so absorbed in Bonanza that I forget my own program, what chance have I got with the millions of other viewers?"

That's a darn fine question, and unfortunately I don't have a darn fine answer. I've heard from many overseas members, and the only Benny work I've heard of being dubbed are the movies (in the Gallery is a poster of "To Be or Not To Be" that came out as "Jeu Dangereux"...and I have an advertising postcard of same in German(?!), as well as a Spanish Charlie's Aunt). So not sure that they ever dubbed the TV shows.
