Whats with 1948?

Postby krledu » Sun Oct 07, 2007 6:59 pm

I was down loading some Jack Benny episode that were broadcast at the end of 1948. There is an episode that was supposed to have broadcast on 11-22-1948 but it said that it never broadcast. Does anyone know why? A lot of the same gags were used and even the same commercial was used for the 12-26-48 show so I'm sure the previous one did not broadcast. Can anyone tell me?

Maybe because Sunday was 11-21-48? Sounds like someone's got a misdate.

Sorry, wrong date

Sorry that first date should be 12-22-1948. The title, which I got from vicandsade.net, says its an unbroadcast CBS special. I was just wondering because it has the same gags, commercial and song that is played on 12-26-48.

Hi, Krl. My wild guess is based on a line at 6:32 when Rochester kicks a line and Jack says "You can read this one again. This is a preview." I can only presume this was a disk for CBS affiliates so they would know what the show would sound like when it aired on their stations, though Lord how anyone would be ignorant of what Jack's show sounded like.

If it WAS a recording so CBS affiliates could hear what the Benny would sound like on their stations, it would make perfect sense. In previous years, many shows changed casts, sponsors and/or formats when they moved from one network to another, and apparently there were some rumors that Jack's show might be different on CBS than what it was on NBC.

If a "demo" show was recorded for CBS stations, it was probably to reassure them that the Benny program that CBS was getting was the same one that had been heard on NBC.

Makes Sense

That would make sense. I didn't catch the line at 6:32. Now, does anyone know who would have heard this preview? I'm sure it wasn't the general public.

I think I mentioned it earlier. It'd be a demo disk sent to affiliates. It could be used for local sales presentations for adjacencies, if the Benny show was sold that way.

What surprises me is Jack would record a whole show for them instead of the technical people just snipping an old broadcast, like they did with the AFRS shows. But, I guess with the kind of $$ CBS was throwing around, you do a full show for the affiliates.
