The Best Year of the Jack Benny Show?

Postby Jack Benny » Mon Nov 01, 2004 4:55 pm

I was thining I have seen a lot of Benny polls, but I've never seen fans have to pick just one year as the shows very best.

It's hard to pick just one year (even though we have just 3 to pick from!). I picked '48 because it is the right "era" for me. The 30's are a little too hyperactive for me, the war years have an underlying strain, the fifties lose Phil and, effectively, Mary, but the late 40s are all fun. For Halloween I listened to the '48 Halloween show and always love this one. The opening is hilarious, and I love the gag where Jack and the Beavers are divvying up their goods on the sidewalk. Jack and one of the Beavers have the last two picks: a stick of gum, or a penny.

"What do you want Mr. Benny, the stick of gum, or the penny?"

"Well....." (long pause) "I'll take the stick of gum".

"OK, get your foot off the penny!"

Yikes...whoops...I was going to add more years to chose from, but I accidentally hit submit. Oh, well... get out and vote!

1948 was a great year for the Benny show! That season included that excellent story arc about Jack getting robbed of Ronald Colman's Oscar...and Jack's hilarious attempts to replace it (which included shows with several big-name guest stars).
