I do remember Drew Pearson, but not all that well. I do remember quite well his successor in writing the "Washington Merry-Go-Round" column, Jack Anderson, who was quite prominent during the Watergate investigations.

I've only read the part on Pearson and Joe McCarthy. I didn't know any of this, as it's before my time, but it's quite fascinating.

Innuendo-as-fact is not something unknown in political circles even today.
