Jack Benny’s Sister-in-Law Jailed in Row
Mrs. Babe Blum, jack Benny’s sister-in-law and the object of 1000 jokes on the comedian’s radio and TV programs, was released on $1000 bond yesterday after a night in the County Jail. And it was no joke.
Mrs. Blum, sister of Actress Mary Livingston, and two male companions were arrested Sunday night after they allegedly attempted to force their way into a West Hollywood apartment. The apartment was occupied by TV Actor Robert Hannon, 26 and Airline Steward Edward Costley, 26, who said they refused admission to the trio and called deputies when Mrs. Blum and her companions tried to break the door in.
Deputies’ Report
Mrs. Blum told arresting officers that she “would get their jobs for this.” Deputies said it took four of them to drag her from the apartment house to a police car.
She refused to give her age while being booked but admitted her address is 81 N Alta Drive, Beverly Hills. She was booked on charges of drunkenness and disturbing the peace.
Later Mrs. Blum was released on a writ requested by the office of Atty. Jerry Giesler. She was ordered to appear on the charges in Department 40 of the Municipal Court Thursday at 1:45 pm.
Two Plead Guilty
Mrs. Blum’s companions, Joseph D’Elia, 31, of 178 N. Alexandria St., and Clement F. Scappaticci, 36, of 180 N. Alexandria St., pleaded guilty to disturbing the peace in Beverly Hills Municipal Court later yesterday. Judge Henry H. Draeger fined them $100 each, suspending $75 of the fines. Mrs. Blum was divorced last February from Myrt T. Blum, Beverly Hills business executive, after 12 years of marriage.
