I also love the Christmas shows, and the 1960 version on TV is my favorite. I especially love Charlie Cantor ( I think that was his name ) as the nightgown salesman ( Da loops? ). I fall over when he has to put on gloves to handle the merchandise. 'Touching these things make me a nervous wreck...especially the black ones! I find his portrayal much funnier than the actor who played it on radio ( Peter Leeds? ).
As far as the suicide jokes go, I doubt it it caused the suicide rate to increase, at a time when guns were also much easier to obtain. It was not the same crazy world we live in now.

The actor who played the "Moolie" (nightgown salesman) on radio was the great Elliott Lewis (Frankie Remley from the Harris/Faye show).

Leeds rarely appeared on Jack's show. The only character I remember him doing was a weird fan who started with a normal voice and then broke into a falsetto. He did it for a couple of shows but there's really nowhere you can go with that kind of character.

Yes, I remember that character but I didn't realize it was Peter Leeds. It was rather annoying. Of course, Leeds went on to do some acting roles on TV and movies.
