4 dates for horn blows at midnight

Postby epeterd » Sat Jun 06, 2009 12:07 pm

I just listened to the show where Jack asks four different women to go with him to the premiere of The Horn Blows at Midnight. I was just wondering what brought that show about where Jack and Rochester were the only regulars on the show. I'm not home so I don't have my copy of 39 Forever.

That funny show was actually not an episode of Jack's regular program, but rather an episode of the AFRS series "Mail Call", broadcast for servicepeople during WWII.

For years a recording of this show was in circulation with not-that-great sound quality and an opening from a regular Benny program tacked on the beginning to replace the missing "Mail Call" opening. That recording also faded out at the end of the story, with no real show closing.

In recent years a new, MUCH better-sounding recording of that program has surfaced, complete with the real "Mail Call" show opening and closing.

Ya know, now that you mention it, I believe I've heard that Mail Call episode on XM before. That does make sense. But being in the middle of the Jack Benny shows on my disc, I didn't realize it.
