Phil and Four-Way Cold Tablets

Postby scottp » Sun Nov 01, 2009 3:16 pm

"When Radio Was" just played a 1949 Phil Harris/Alice Faye show where Rexall is considering a move into TV. When Alice gets annoyed with Phil comparing her to Betty Grable, she switches into her New York tough broad persona and says, "Ahh, yer fadda' takes Four-Way Cold Tablets!"

Why is that particular product funny? Did Rexall have anything to do with it? (If I recall correctly from late-50s Suspense shows, Four-Way was a product of Grove Laboratories.)

I was recently listening to one of Jack's shows but can't remember which one. They mentioned something about showing Jack's show or movie in 3-D and joking that there would then be 12-way cold tablets. Wish I could remember more to reverence the episode.

It was early (maybe March, maybe February) 1953. I just heard that myself (and I'm now in April 1953)

I just assumed that 3-way cold tablet was just topical at the time.

Unless I'm the victim of a suburban legend, in those pre-payola days the writers collected $$$ from Bendix for each mention of a Bendix washing machine on the air. Perhaps cold hard cash made 4way cold tablets funny too? Lucrative or not, Bendix and 4way were terrific running gags.
That's funny, Norman Krasna loved that joke.
