Yes, through iTunes just search for "Jack Benny Show - OTR Podcast."

Yosemite Shows (And Orson Show that follows)

Postby zimmerly » Thu Mar 04, 2010 3:30 pm

I've been listening to the Yosemite shows this week on my drive to work and back. I realized this week that these must have been the first Benny shows that I ever listened to - they were the ones that got me hooked. About five years ago I was starting a creative writing class in my high school, and I wanted to hear some old radio shows so that I could have the kids model that kind of writing. Well, I listened to many comedy shows, but Benny's was the one that stuck. Yosemite got me! The Orson Welles show soon after Yosemite is also insanely funny. Is that Orson guffawing in the background? I'm pretty sure, at this point, I can identify everyone's unscripted chortles, but on the Orson episode, I keep hearing one I can't identify. If that is Mr. Welles, he was quite the giggle-guts... even Hollywood's boy genius (actor, writer, producer, AND director!) can't keep his composure around the Benny gang! It makes me feel not so guilty for nearly letting my laughter-impaired driving run me off the road sometimes...

I love the hidden pee jokes about Dennis

Jack: Where's Dennis? Oh.

Jack: Come on, Rochester, let's go. Where's Dennis? Oh.

They do it in a Rose Bowl episode, too

Jack: Now, where's Dennis?
Phil: He'll be back in a minute.
Jack: Oh.

The closest they come to this sort of feel again is when they take trips to New York and go to the train station and such, but even then it is not an adventure on such a grand scale. Does anyone know what the deal was with this extended storyline that was never repeated again?

They did do extended bits with Buck Benny, the "stolen" violin, Ronald Coleman's Oscar, the firing, replacing and re-hiring of The Sportsmen and when jack gets hit in the head and becomes a spendthrift. Those aren't quite like the trip to Yosemite because they don't follow the group to a "location", the running gag is part of the "studio" show but they are stories that extend beyond one scene in one episode.
It would have been fun if they'd done a little more of that.
If I've told you once I've told you five times...

I always wondered why Jack paid for everybody's rooms (except Phil's but that was because he was mad at him...)

Is that what was going on in with those sequences? I had no idea what they were trying to say.
