Greenberg hit a homer in the 8th. Cubs had an "M Livingston" on their staff. This is fascinating stuff. Wish I had more time to poke around at it.

Oh, for corn's sake. The game I described was on Sunday, the 7th. That means it's possible the game was over before the Benny show aired at 7pm Eastern. Sorry for the sloppiness on my part, I read the dateline and took it to be the game date.

Mickey Livingston was the Cubs' catcher that day.

And, yes, Laura explains the Greenberg thing in her book:

During the 1945 baseball season, there was a tight pennant race between the Detroit Tigers (Greenberg's team) and the Washington Senators. At one point during the game, Hank Greenberg was on third base and made it safe to home on a hit. However, the hit was ruled a foul ball, and the home plate umpire made Greenberg return to third base where he was later tagged out. However, he came back to hit a grand slam, which put the Tigers 1.5 games ahead of Washington. They went on to win the World Series over the Cubs 4-3.

I'm presuming the game in question was the Sept. 30 match against St. Louis. Greenberg hit one over the left field wall to win it. And the standings who Detroit 1 1/2 games up on Washington, with the Tigers winning the pennant.

Can anyone shed any light at all on this quick gag from Jack on the 1940-03-30 episode?

Jack is complaining about his writers

Jack: I have more trouble with those guys...
Mary: Well, it's your own fault, Jack. Why don't you fire 'em?
Jack: Oh, I can't. You know how soft-hearted I am. Besides, they saw me once at Laguna Beach with a-- well, anyway...

Sounds like it might be a reference to a Hollywood scandal of some kind

This may be spelled wrong, but what was Fink's Mules? Jack and Fred Allen often use the name as a vaudeville act that Allen was in. Did it actually exist? The audience seemed to understand the references!

A Google of "Finks Mules" brought up this: "Fink's Mules are often referred to when talking about vaudeville. Mr. Fink had a vaudeville act of trained mules doing tricks." (http://www.day3media.com/culture.html)

I can't find anything specific. Laguna Beach was an artists colony at the time so anything could have happened.

By the 1970s, and I don't know how long before, Laguna Beach was thought of as gayer-than-the-average-community.
My sister had a college roomate from there (late 1960s) and when she visited her around 2000, the roomate's dad (age 80 or so) warned them about going for an evening stroll. "There's a lot of gays out there!"
Dad was not mentally sharp by then...

And Groucho, on YBYL... [I've removed my poor-memory version, now that I've heard it again]

-- a contestant said when she and another girl were "swimming a la naturel" at Laguna Beach, they had to call for help, and three lifeguards came out to them.
Groucho said, "Two girls, and only three lifeguards came out? Well, that's Laguna Beach! At Santa Monica it would have been seven!"
