Name That Tune: Show 38-10-02

Postby Familyghost » Sat Jul 13, 2013 11:47 am

Imagine the joy of hearing the Benny shows for the first time! That's what I am enjoying.

Can anyone identify the piece of music played during the introductory sketch from the October 2, 1938 show?

The sketch is the gang preparing to return to the show. Before each cast member, the band plays a quick burst of music. It is totally contagious swing! But what is it?

Thanks.

Laura lists three instrumental numbers from that show, "Confidentially", "What Goes on Here in My Heart" and "I Married an Angel" in 39 Forever Vol. 1, in that order, so probably "Confidentially".

Hmm..

Thank-you, of course. I'm just not certain that THAT is the correct answer. Certainly all those songs appear in the program without a doubt, but NONE are the introductory sketch song.

Phil: "I checked them out on youtube, Jackson, and by golly you may be right."

Now on a hunch, I did some digging. You all know the musical director of the program was Mahlon Merrick. If you look at this link: http://nwda.orbiscascade.org/ark:/80444/xv35570,

Under that looong list of original compositions, any number of them would fit the bill. For instance: Impact Theme, Kickoff March, or Montage.

So my theory is that Mahlon wrote it Himself!

Mary: "Ha ha ha HA!"
Jack: "What is it Mary?"
Mary: "Oh look the great detective. What do you call yourself, Der 'Bing'-le?
Jack: "Mary...."

Maybe someone with access to his papers and who can read a bit of music, will let us know. Meanwhile, I will be saving up for a trip to Pullman, Washington. Play Phil.
