Phil Harris short subject on TCM, Feb. 8

Postby Shemp » Wed Feb 07, 2007 8:55 am

TCM will run Phil Harris' short subject DOUBLE OR NOTHING (1936), Thursday Feb. 8 @ 9:39AM (nominated for a 1937 Oscar).

Sorry for the short notice; TCM schedules its "One Reel Wonder" segments only a week at a time.

This is great news. While I've seen two earlier Phil Harris shorts ("So This Is Harris" and "Harris In The Spring"), I've never seen one called "Double Or Nothing", so this will be a first-time treat for me.

As Phil would say, "Yeah, Man!"

I DO enjoy the shorts, often more than the movies. unfortunately, adelphia cable has removed tcm from the basic cable line-up in L.A. to force us i suppose to upgrade to digital cable, and i ain't gonna pay an extra $30 for that one channel. i have never seen any of harris' shorts. can you tell us briefly what his shorts were about?
thanks, mike

The two Harris shorts that I've seen are little musical-comedies....much like the shorts that Bing Crosby made for Mack Sennett in the early 1930's.

Phil plays himself, and his character is much like his character when he first joined the Benny program in 1936.....not really an illiterate loudmouth, but more like a charming ladies' man.

There's a slight plot in each short....usually a "mistaken identity" plot, and Phil is usually going after some girl. During the story Phil will take time to sing a song here and there.

They're not GREAT shorts, but they're fun and pleasant....and it's interesting to see and hear Phil in his early days.
